Eh I have some mixed thoughts about this story. Something about the ending just truly did not sit right with me. Malcolm crying at this old woman dying isn’t necessarily out of character but it didn’t feel like it fit correctly. The old woman’s xenophobia was so short lived I don’t even know if it was necessary. She forgets about it kind of immediately. Along with that Malcolm is just in a horrible mood the whole time. It is kind of a downer to read about. He also doesn’t really get any catharsis, he starts angry and ends sad. I feel like the author did do angry Malcolm well though. He is a hard character to write because he reveals so little about himself in the show (I am currently half way through season 2 so maybe this will change?). I think for this being their first story and entry in these novels it definitely has some room for improvement. It felt very bleh.
