I thought this story was interesting. The first thing I did was look up Vulcan firebird to see if that was a thing in the series that I wasn't familiar with, but it looks like the author came up with it. Which is interesting to come up with something like that for a short story. I think the most interesting thing about this story was the moment that the author chose to write about. Hoshi's apprehension of being on a star ship makes so much sense. She is a linguist not an astronaut or test pilot. Her acute aural abilities make any shall shifts in the engine noises so loud and apparent to her of course that's freaky. It's an interesting moment to be in her head.

Something that was very obvious was that the author mixed up Lieutenant Malcom Reed and Commander Tripp Tucker. Reed is in engineering and talking with Tripp's southern mannerisms. The author herself admitted this mix up. Only the first season of Star Trek enterprise had been out at that time. And I am not sure how much of the Star Trek wikis existed in 2001 /2002. Honestly I was hoping for this story to be a little more grounded in Hoshi, than it being about a random Vulcan fantasy.
