The heart of this story I thought was good. It was a quintessential why doctors do what they do kind of story. I love Phlox, I think he is a top notch character. Him making these kinds of connections with someone else feels realistic to me, but it did feel very rushed even for a short story. I think a few more small vignettes really would have fleshed out this relationship and make it feel more whole, make her death feel a little more impactful.

There were also just parts of the story that felt odd? An eleven year old asked an alien out for a meal? A patient can only leave with a doctor and not their parent? Why wasn't her mom there that seemed really weird to me. She just let her daughter go out with this strange alien man?!

I did like their conversations and felt like the author wrote in a very authentic Phlox voice. Hailey seemed a little older than written, but I feel like having sick kids be wise beyond their years is a popular trope so I will give it a pass.
