First of all this is a bit of genre that I know I disliked, I honestly like historical fiction just not the war themed ones. After reading this short story? I still dislike it. The first few pages were so much naval jargon I wanted to stop, if this had been a full length novel I probably would have. Once I plowed through those first few pages, I was then bombarded with just so many names that I did not care about. These also were not names that came up later, most of them were one offs being given commands, and it made the story feel clogged. The bit about paganism being just what G-d gave human kind before Jesus really rubbed me the wrong way as a Jew. The world is not full of Christianity and Christianity precursors. I think without that line the story would have been a bit more interesting, it would have been more about accepting multiple truths rather than bull dozing it with just one. I think the story of multiple truths and multiple rights has a place in the Star Trek. The Prime Directive is all about not interfering with the cultures of others. It just really rubbed me the wrong way.

I was primed to dislike this story, and I don't think a lot could have changed that, but it could have been worse! It made me read a little about the history of our country and our favorite starship, so I guess for that it was valuable.
